Yarn Pom Pom

This project is really simple and easy. This is perfect for this cold weather. The fluffy pom pom make you feel warm inside. I was playing with my Mama yarn one day and she show me how easy it is to make it into a pom pom. Just some little yarn and a scissors can create cute little fluffy pom pom. 

This was my first creation. I left the yarn as it is. The yarn is big and corse like. But, it is still pretty cute. I posted some pictures of this pom pom on my facebook’s page and Shi Zhi Lin asked me to make a video tutorial. I said yes.

I have an addiction problem. I am addicted to buying earrings. I believe I own over 200 pair of earrings. I can’t resist the glow of the gem stones or the shine of the rhinestones. It’s as if it is calling my name, “Mei! Take me home with you!”  *heehee* Yup, I am a sucker for earrings. 

This is why I made a earring rack that can hold over 100 pair of earrings a while back.

The rack was completely made from wood. I’m trying to recreate the same rack in a video tutorial. My first rack was based on a vision, with no proper measurements or angles. The result was useable but not properly made. I didn’t even use the right tools. In the video tutorial, I provide the correct measurement and proper tools. 

If you are interested in making this earring rack, there are some tools and safety measures to know.

The Razor Saw

This is a very useful tool for cutting wood, plastic and soft metal. The teeth on the saw can be very sharp. Make sure to hold firmly on the handle when you cut the wood. You have to be patient when using this tool. It is easier and more pleasant if you saw it with medium force rather than forcing all your strength in one little cut. May I suggest using Michael’s 40% coupons when purchasing fairly high price items. ^_^ It is a good investment if you plan to make more small wood, plastic, or soft metal projects. 

The Mitre Box

This little tool helps guide the wood in the proper place while cutting. As you can see, there are 3 cutting areas. The middle is for a straight cut. The left & right areas are for 45 degree angle cuts. In my earring rack tutorial video, I made (4) 45 degree cuts. You will notice that the box is not completely flat on the bottom. There is a small ridge on the edge of the box that sits perfectly on the edge of the table, holding the box in place while you saw. 

Wood Frame Rod

You can use any kind of wooden frame to fit your desire and style. I made two racks. The first earring rack I used wooden round rods, size 3/8 (orange). The second rack, which is the one in the video, was made from a wooden frame rods as shown above. I found that the flat side edge of the frame rods is easier to use. You might want to keep that in mind when you pick your frame. 

If you don’t like the look of natural wood, you can always spray paint the rack with any color.

Final Cut Measurement 

2 orange (Frame Rod) - 8/ 16 inch (Straight cut both ends)

2 yellow - 14 inch - 5/16 inch (Straight cut both ends)

2 yellow - 14.5 inch ( 45 degree cut one ends)

2 yellow - 4.5 inch (45 degree cut one ends)

7 dark green - 14 inch (Straight cut both ends)

Cuts

Straight Cut 

The straight cut is more like a 90 degree cut. If you are using the mitre box, you use the center line to create the straight cut. 

45 Degree Cut

There are two areas of the mitre box to use so you can create the 45 degree cut, use the right & left side together (cutting diagonally).

Wood Filler

This step is really optional. Depending on the width of your rack legs, you may or may not have any gaps between the rods. As you can see below.

You can fill the gap with wood glue to have a stronger bond. 

When you finish, you can fill the whole rack with all your lovely earrings. ^_^
